OK, my dear readers…Just in time for the holiday season, I’ve got an amazing contest to share. Nickelodeon and Walmart have teamed up to offer a contest, hosted by the Walmart Eleven Moms, that I think you’ll like.

No, I take that back. This is a contest I think you’ll love!

So here are the deets:

Share your best 3366ff;">HOLIDAY 0000ff;">DECORATING money saving tip. If your tip doesn’t have to do with the holidays AND decorating, it won’t count.
Enter by submitting your tip in the comments of this post. One tip per comment please.
Each contestant can enter up to THREE times.
Contest will close on December 12 at 11:59pm.
After the contest ends, the top 10 tips submitted as determined by the judges will then be put into a random drawing. The one winner of the random drawing will receive the $500 Walmart gift card.

The gift card will be mailed out on December 17 so it is imperative that the winner get me their mailing address as soon as possible after said winner is announced.

Another great holiday decorating tip is to allow the kids to use water-washable Christmas colored markers to draw Christmas designs and write Christmas wishes on the inside of the windows in your house. It’s so funny watching the kids concentrate so deeply as they try to write backwards so everyone can read their message from the outside. Plus, it gives you something cute to take a photo of and put in your scrapbook for smiles for years to come. The markers are cheaper than most window decorations and come in all kinds of colors now a days.

My third and final decorating tip is for all those college-bound kids who like to decorate their cars and dorm rooms, but don’t have a lot of money or extra storage space. I bought a bunch of those Christmas themed window clings the last Christmas my son was home with us before heading to college. I also bought one of those photo albums with the sticky stuff on the page and the clear plastic covers. I put all the clings into the album and marked the cover “Christmas Decorations” before sneaking it in with his boxes of stuff he took to school with him. Now, each year he pulls off the decorations and puts them on all the glass surfaces in his room (windows, mirrors, etc.) and on the windows in his car. He also likes to use the left-overs to decorate his best friends’ rooms and his dorm’s common area. The kids there all love the decorations, they’ll last for years to come, and they store in little or no space during the off-season. He love them!

Take a large glass container and place old ornaments in it for a table center.

Take nick-knacks you normally use in the house and put a few holiday sprigs on it.

Instead of buying new wreaths and garland, just buy inexpensive ribbon/baubles and give them an updated look with a new color theme. Who actually looks at the wreath? Only what’s on it.

My best tip is to use what you have. Every year, my children and I make a few new ornaments. This year we rolled strips of holiday scrapbook paper around knitting needles and squeezed them into those clear glass ornaments. We threw a decorative ribbon around them and they turned out pretty enough that we’re giving several away as gifts to dear ones.

I do not do a whole lot of decorating right now b/c my youngest son destroys it, but I do have to make sure my house SMELLS like Christmas! I am addicted to Bath & Body Works Wallflowers. I have learned to pounce when they mark them down (several times a year) to either $5 or $6 each for the refills, then I buy a bunch. I also subscribe to their mailing list and they have great coupons. I use the free item coupons and the $10 off coupons to get more wallflowers…I also take advantage of the sales/coupons to stock up on hand soaps and I get holiday scents in those too. For some reason, scents really put me in the Christmas spirit, so I love sudsing up with peppermint and baked cookies and vanilla bean noel, etc.

One of the really neat money saving decorating tips that we have done year after year, that the kids love is making ornaments. One of our favorite ornaments to make is icicles. You can purchase a sheet of thin plexi-glass, then cut it up into different shapes, put in the oven, and bake until soft, after cooling for a minute, you can twist to form twirly hanging icicles. It turns out beautifully,and catches the light of any colored string of lights.

Place a variety of different colored Christmas swatches on your table, width wise, green, red, gold, and then cover with a clear plastic table cloth. This makes a beautiful, cheap table cover, plus it is easy to clean up.

Another holiday decorating idea is to take any colored ribbon that is shimmery and tie around your everyday napkin rings, that way you can reuse your plain napkin rings, with a touch of christmas color, and you don’t have to splurge the extra money for a whole new set.

This year we bought a smaller tree and I couldn’t use all of my ornaments, so I put some of the plain ball ornaments into a vase and have it setting on our dining table. I’m sure this will become a tradition from now on, it’s a cheap, festive and pretty centerpiece.
