Yes, I'm Now a MagPie on Twitter

UPDATE:  I HAVE DEACTIVATED MY MAGPIE ACCOUNT AND USED THE MONEY EARNED TO SERVE A FEW CHARITABLE ADS OF MY OWN...including the following link:

http://tinyurl.com/jessicaknowsmagpie

However, I will still continue to try new platforms and tools on the interwebs on my terms.

----

When I first heard about the concept of advertising on Twitter, I immediately discounted the idea.  I am on Twitter for the conversation, the shared resources, and cross-promotion of the people and ideas that I believe in.  I have gotten hired, connected with PR reps, and established business partnerships all with the help of Twitter.

So after I went to the Magpie website, input my Twitter name and waited a few second, that potential amount I could make from being a Magpie was staggering.  I do have a paid job and it pays well.  However, my husband's company just laid off 25% of their work force and he's got half the work load he did a few months ago.  I see that as the writing on the wall.

Since I use Twitter to promote those people and ideas I'm passionate about and my own projects, why not be a Magpie and allow advertisements on my Twitter stream?  I don't really see the difference between that and putting affiliate text link ads in my blog posts.

I've talked to a couple of my blogging friends who I always look to when I'm debating a decision like this and guess what.  They're a bit stressed about the economy now too.  In fact, they're all going to give Magpie a whirl too.

I know this is going to create some controversy but at the same time I hope you take my reasons into consideration.

If you decide to try Magpie too, please let me know your thoughts in the comments here.

Chirp, chirp!

I (for now) 'potentially' equate magpie with the ads I see displayed when I use Google Apps e-mail for our business e-mail services. I find most Google Apps / Adsense ads useful, when I don't I ignore them. Bottom line is, you vote with your electronic feet. You don't like it? Then stop following or stop using Twitter, plain & simple. Folks who turn this mole hill into a mountain clearly have too much time on their hands. So far, the most vocal ppl I see Twittering about their supposed problem with magpie are the most boring Twitter-ers I happen to follow (makes me think it's time to 'clean house' on a new front). See a pattern here folks???

I truly don't see what is so different about being a magpie and retweeting someone's self promotion or hyping your own blog posts or products.
One tweet here or there is easy to skip over. I agree with Jessica, soon the advertising will be as normal as the ads we see on blogs. Back when people started posting those everyone screamed in horror and declared that they were selling out.

I'm happy to help promote each and every one of you, and I'm thrilled to have the chance to be payed to promote someone else's products.

I'm a single wahm so I can use the extra bucks. However, I kind of chickened out & set it at every 15 posts so hopefully I don't offend anyone.

I'm surprised that I hadn't heard anything about Magpie before today. It sounds like it's definitely worth checking out. I'll keep an eye on your tweets Jessica as I'm curious to how the whole concept works on Twitter.

After reading this I decided to take a look. Unfortunately I don't know how accurate those estimates are. Please check out my new blog posting, I want to get a good discussion going to see how accurate Magpie really is.

I agree with you! I almost didn't sign up because I wasn't sure what type of ads they would tweet. Then I thought that if I didn't like it I could always opt out. I'm on Twitter a lot and if I could make a few extra coins I'm all for it. You're right what is the difference between magpie and say Google Ads or any other ad links on blogs? Twitter moves so fast that it really shouldn't disturb a whole lot of people.

I still haven't seen a magpie post by myself or anyone else. With all the talk the last few days I thought I would have seen something by now.
