Neti Pot, Meet Jessica Nose

After years of agonizing sinus pressure and pain, I finally decided to give in and try the Neti Pot.  The only factor that was stopping me before?  The Fear Factor.  I kept imagining I'd swallow all that salty water or that it would hurt.

The Neti Pot is an ancient treatment based on Ayurvedic principles for cleansing one's body.  Many yoga practitioners use a Neti Pot before their daily yoga practice.  Me?  I just want to get what feels like a screw driver and vice putting pressure and pain on my sinuses to disappear.

So today, my dear sweet husband picked up a Neti Pot at our local natural foods store.  And since the awesome folks sent me and the rest of Walmart's ElevenMoms Flip Video MinoHD , I thought, why not film my Neti Pot maiden voyage.

Here is the video footage.  What you can't see is my husband trying his best not to laugh at me and my son practicing his karate moves in the background.  (You can hear my son, though!)

Do my sinuses feel better?  A little, I think I need to do another treatment today, but you'll see from the video that the experience was much further from being traumatic than I originally thought.

I agree with some of the other comments - steam first and get better effects or kill two birds and bring the pot in the shower! I also found that the recommended amount of solution was too strong and cut back on that and had better results. Good for you for giving it a try. It gets easier with time!

My BFF swears by this and has even gotten her kids doing it. My husband has the exact same Neti as you. He says it helps, but I'm not brave enough to try it. Especially not on video! You're about as brave/crazy as that woman who did it for the first time on Oprah!

About 20 years ago my son's pediatrician had told us to use a product called Alkalol with a nasal wash cup. He had HORRIBLE sinus and allergy problems & this helped SO much. The nasal wash cup is similar to the neti pot but MUCH easier to use (it's a one-handed application).

Anyway, you can also ask your pharmacist about it if you're curious (non-prescription).

I'm sorry about your sinus pressure, but that video was hysterical. A whole new side of you! Glad it helped, and hope it's even less traumatic the second time. :-)

I am SO in love with the Neti pot - it isn't funny! Rock on with your bad self - I just don't want people to see ME using it!

I just got into the Neti Pot craze, and just posted a blog entry on it. Granted, it's a bit more of a comical post than serious, but I can't help but to a) love this thing, while at the same time b) think it's so nasty and ridiculous.

Neti Pot may work but I think it is only temporary. I do believe in using herbs for long term success.

I hate cold and flue time. No medication seems to work well for me. I either get very tired or am out of my mind the hole day. One of my step-daughters recommendedFlonase over the counter. during one of the worst bouts of sinus congestion I've ever had. It's a nasal spray I take once a day in each nostril and it clears up my sinuses! Thought I'd share this with ya. It helps!
