Me Time: Day 7 of 15 Days of New Years Resolutions

If only there were 27 hours in a day, I think I could get some "me time".  Right?  Wrong.  There is always something to fill up every hour of the day and very little of it is dedicated just to me.  It's the kidlet and me, the dishes and me, work and me, or Twitter and me.  Don't get me wrong, I love all that time too (well, except for the dishes) but when things get stressful, or overwhelming, I'm starting to realize I need to take a breather.

The makers of the Time Out Spot sent me this awesome shirt that says, appropriately, "Mommy Needs a Timeout".  I think I'm going to start wearing it when I feel the need for some "me time" approaching and hope my hubs takes the hint.

Need some ideas for taking your own time out?  These are some that I am going to try in 2009.

  • Going to a chick flick movie by myself.  Buying a huge tub of popcorn and a large non-diet soda.  And I'll probably get some Milk Duds, too.

  • Getting a pedicure at the beginning of sandal season.

  • Going on a trip to connect with other like-minded women.  In February, I will be attending the Blissdom Conferenceget-your-bliss-on BadgesNow, unlike most conferences this one will be small and intimate with lots of learning, connecting, and bonding with other women, a lot of them Moms.  In fact, I'll be speaking at this conference about social media and how to become a social media rockstar.  A lot of the time, these conferences can be totally cost-prohibitive but if you register now, you can get in on it for $100!  Then all you'll need to think about is getting there.  Short on funds but high on enthusiasm?  Get sponsored!  A lot of companies want exposure to the women at these types of events.  However, they want more than signage or ad space.  They want the women talking about them!  Approach your favorite brand's PR department or agency and let them know you'd like to be their brand ambassador at Blissdom.  In exchange for paying your expenses, you can offer them product placment, live blogging, blogger outreach, sample distribution, and more.  Try it!  Need to figure out how to reach those PR peeps in the first place?  No worries, I've got advice for that too.

Also, if you're a company interested in being a premier sponsor for the event, I can give you the low down.  Just email me at jessica at jessicaknows dot com for the deets.

Bottom line, taking more time for "me time" will make you happier, help maintain your sanity, and you know what?  You deserve it!

Share your plan for getting more "me time in '09" in the comments.

I'm with ya on this one too. It's been a rough couple of years with a lot of financial stress after hubby's numerous layoffs, but we're finally back in a position where he's found some job stability and I've been able to cut back on my work at home ventures. I'm looking forward to having a little time to myself to dive back into some of those little pleasures I've been missing so much lately – reading, knitting, cooking from scratch and more. Here's to Mommy Me Time – clink!

And I'm totally stoked to be speaking at BlissDom as well!

Even as an empty nester who's retired it is sometimes difficult to find "me" time. So, I'm with you on that. Blissdom sounds GREAT - too bad the hotel & flight would kill the deal for me.

Last year I sat down and made a list of all the things that energize me in my trusty journal. Writing in a journal, getting a massage, etc.

Last year I got one massage per month, no exceptions for any reason. And I also took a long soak in the tub once a week. Heavenly. There really are days when the ONLY thing I got to do BY MYSELF the entire day was that 20 minute soak in the tub.

I put so much of myself out there for other people - and with a preschooler, a toddler and a newborn, I am NEVER alone. **laughing**

"ME TIME" is so important for women! I know it's difficult for new mommies or mommies generally, but I found, I'm much happier, healthier, and whole when I take time out for me. I've been taking annual trips to see girlfriends out of state to get a way from family/chores, work and it's very refreshing. I guess this is an area I've been fortunate to have been doing for the past few years...however, when my kids were younger, I didn't get that...wish I would have, until I woke up one day realizing that MOMMY needs ME time, I always felt guilty taking time for "ME". Not anymore! It helps me to stay sane.

First, thanks a ton for recommending how to get a sponsor for BlissDom. I've really wanted to go this year and I have been having trouble getting the funds - especially the airfare and/or gasoline+rental car! Maybe I can find someone to sponsor my travel expenses.

I definitely need the "me time." My husband used to work 24 hour shifts every other day. That means I parented by myself. Many times he'd have overtime which would cause him to work 72 hours - leaving me to parent alone for 72 hours. I never caught a break and we never knew enough people to ask for babysitters. Now that we're living near family again and he's out of the fire service, I'm totally stoked to start taking that time for myself. BlissDom would be my first step in doing this. I haven't had a night away from my kids since I was a mom 4 years ago! If I have, I've been like right down the street and usually get called every 5 minutes. I'd love to leave everyone behind for a weekend and just do things for myself with other women who feel the same way! lol

This year I definitely plan on taking time to myself. Even if it's only once a month that I get a day to myself, it's WAY more than I've had in the past. I love this resolution the most!

I'm definitely seeing the need to work in a little more me time this year. It's funny, but my husband gave me a t-shirt for Christmas with a woman in a ponytail, sitting down with a big mug, and a "Me Time" caption under it. I got a chaise and lamp this week that we tucked in a corner of our bedroom for a reading nook. I've been up until 1:30-2:00 a.m. the last two nights reading. It felt almost decadent. My goal this year is to save up for a laptop, so eventually I hope to be able to cozy up my little nook and get some work done, too.

That's a great idea about sponsorship for BlissDom! I planned to attend and stay with my cousin, who lives in Nashville. When I found out she'll be in California at that time, I sort of gave up on the idea of attending, thinking it would be cost prohibitive with hotel expenses, too. I need to put my thinking cap on as far as contacting sponsors. Sometimes it's just so difficult to find who to contact.

The movie night sounds like a great idea! I've got some spontaneous girlfriends who might go with me, too. There's another couple at church that we really enjoy, and we haven't had much time to hang out with them lately. We talked last week and we are going to start having some couples' dinners out with them on Sunday nights, starting this week or next. That will let us get together without kids and without worrying about cleaning house. :-)

I'll be attending a few conferences in 2009 including the awesome Blissdom. I consider this my "me time" as I will be away from my family. I rarely leave them so it will be hard on me but I truly feel I'm deserving of some this time away, after all, I've been married and having kids since I was 16....surely I deserve a little right?

I'll also be trying to get out more.....like antique shopping with friends, lunches, etc. Just something that I enjoy doing.
