Give Back (& a $300 Giveaway!): Day 8 of 15 Days of New Years Resolutions

NEW YORK - APRIL 29: Visitors eat free lunch ...

In 2009, I want to give back to my community, both locally and globally.  While it is easy for some to just write a big check, that's not realistic for a lot of people at this time.  However, by giving your time or your talents to a good cause, you can make just as big of an impact.

Ways that I plan on giving back this year:

  • Going throught my family's clothes and donating those that don't fit or we don't need anymore.  I also have two boxes of baby items and maternity clothes that would probably be of better use in a woman's shelter instead of the garage.

  • Support mom-owned businesses.  I started Project Buzz Butter as a way to give moms the equivalent of above the fold advertising for simply just paying it forward in return.  I also plan to invest in a mom-owned business via Kiva.org.  I've been thinking about microfinancing for some time and am ready to take action and do something about it.

  • Shop with companies that sell products from vendors that give a portion of their products to charity.  My Princess Closet is one such company.  They sent me a set of UNESCO finger puppets that my son will find in his stocking Christmas morning.

  • Work with the brands and PR professionals I have a relationship with to give back both locally and globally.

And I'm going to not just talk the talk today.  I'm ready to walk the walk.

Libby's Vegetables has provided a very generous giveaway for my readers.  Up for grabs?  A $300 Grocery Shopping Spree!  Now, remember, this is all in the spirit of giving back, right?

So, with that $300, the winner will get to keep $150 for themselves and then shop for a local food pantry, soup kitchen, or other worthy organization in their  local community with the other $150.

How cool is that?!

So what do you have to do to win?  Each of the following gets you one entry.

1. Write a blog post about giving back the local community organization you would want to share this giveaway with and link to it here in the comments.

2.  Check out Libby's Vegetables Top 5 Reasons to "Get Back to the Table" and let me know your favorite as well as YOUR top reason to "Get Back to the Table" here in the comments.

3.  Take a look at the recipes in Libby's Vegetables CANvenient recipes and tell me which one you're most surprised you can make with Libby's Vegetables here in the comment section.

4.  Post a link to this giveaway on your Facebook page and link to it here in the comments.

This contest ends January 6, 2009.  Good Luck! Congrats Denise from The Centsible Sawyer!

#2.It’s Easier to Say No to Drugs: According to the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, frequent family meals have been linked to a lower risk of smoking, drinking and using marijuana. When you spend more time with your kids at the dinner table, it’s easier to spot changes in behavior and develop a better relationship with them (2).

As a parent who has gone through a child getting hooked on drugs ,this means a lot.If you have never been effected by this, count yourself lucky! It is just not the above drugs wrecking havoc,it is meth and this drug is powerful! It tears families and loved one's apart from the inside out.I do agree that eating together gives more time to spot''the red flags''.Years ago i did notice something but was nieve in accepting it before it was too late.Thank God those days are past for her and she is now a mom herself.Spend as much quality time together as you possibly can.I also know this builds bonding time and gives traditions that go on for years. It is great to know that some families still do this.Mine being one i am glad to say.

thank you again for this wonderful giveaway.

Getting back to the table invites conversation - that is something a lot of families are missing out on I'm afraid. I am "Old school" I guess - even at the age of 27! I want my family to sit down to a meal each weeknight - or at least MOST week nights. I know that is why my family growing up was so close. I felt important - my parents wanted to know what was going on in my life.

Loved the getting back to the table. More families need to sit down to dinner together. It's something we make a routine of & we feel it is very important for us and our kids. Love the contest. Our food bank is so low on food that this would be an unbelievable blessing for them! And, for us too - to be able to give to them and help our own family as well. Thank you.
