Take and Share More Photos: Day 9 of 15 Days of New Years Resolutions
I have to confess, I am not a consistent photographer. I have every intention of taking photos at every event. In fact, I bring my camera almost everywhere I go. The problem? I don't remember to take the camera out until AFTER the event. This year, I want to take more photos, improve my photography skills, and upgrade my digital camera. As a result, I'll have more photos to share with my family, friends, and blog readers and I'm hoping that means I'll share more often!
Here's how I plan to achieve this:
- Increase my knowledge and sharpen my photography skills by subscribing to Darren Rowse's Digital Photography School blog. I'm on the lookout for other great blogs and resources so if you know of any, please share in the comments section. I'm hoping that by becoming more of a pro, I'll want to show off those skills more by taking more photos.
- Upgrade my digital camera
...I've got just the basic camera now and want one with more bells and whistles so that as my photography skill set grows, my camera will allow me to apply those skills. I have no idea even where to start so if you, my dear readers, know of an excellent camera under $200 that will fit the bill, please let me know in the comments here.
- Continue using Smilebox for sharing my photos. They've got all kinds of options for free photo postcards, free photo greeting cards, photobooks, and scrapbooks. We used them this year for our photo holiday card and continue to use Smilebox year round for birthday greetings for family, Valentine's Day and to keep our friends and family up to date on all of our latest news. Other great photo sharing sites include SmugMug (with great back-up and super secure storage) and Photoworks.com (for making photo cards and gifts).
I really enjoy looking at photos on other people's blogs so it is my hope that my readers feel the same way. Is one of your New Year's resolutions to take and share more photos too? Share your goals and plans to achieve them...

Love the project 365 the other commenter mentioned. I think sharing photos is a great way for others to have that personable connection with you. I met the lady from Smilebox at Blogher this year and really need to explore that more. And of course I'm a HUGE fan of Darren's photography blog..and the forum. Great place to learn from.
I'll definitely be working on the quality of my photos in the new year. My food photos have come a long ways but still need much improvement and my regular photos just need improvement period.
Good luck with this resolution Jessica. I think people will enjoy what you have to share.

I love photos. I recommend having not only your top-end camera that you use for the best quality photos, but a very portable point-and-click camera for ease of transport. :-) Something that fits in the diaper bag or purse easily.
Also - in terms of what to do with the photos once you've taken them - I don't know if you've seen Creative Memories lately but they have the most amazing digital products now. Their digital photo books are spectacular...double bound (stiched AND glued) with high quality pages.
I am not a CM consultant, but my consultants website is: http://www.mycmsite.com/karis and there is a place to download the StoryBook Creator Plus (the digital software) for free if you want to test it out.
Memory Manager is their digital photo software program and it is very useful as well. You can sort your photos in a myriad of ways so when you decide to put together an album, storybook, or even a gift product like the big coffee mug my husband got for Christmas, it's easy to find a photo to use.

I take lots of pictures and share them online, but I'm bad about not printing. I've bought several frames, so my goal is to print the pictures and get them on the wall!
I got my 17yos a Nikon Coolpix L18 for Christmas. It has 8 megapixels and looks like a nice camera. His is what I call "Superman Blue," but they also have a nice red one, too. If you buy from Wolf Camera (Ritz in some places?) you'll get bonuses like free passes for photography classes.

I'm pretty good about taking pics but it's the scrapbooking that I've fallen off. I think I am going to look into the digital scrapbooking this year since it may be more appropriate for this season of my life. And, I'll be checking into the 365 Project - that sounds cool!
And, I need a new camera too! Our camera died (not the batteries, the camera) at 11:30p on Christmas EVE!!!! I was panicked but luckily Walgreens was open for us to get a disposable. So, an affordable, good quality camera is going to have to get into our budget somehow too!

This really needs to be mine too! When the kids were little I was so good...then the 2nd and 3rd child came and I slacked. It's only been in the last couple of years that I've started up again, since discovering cool tools like Smile box and Shutterfly...has inspired me to keep clicking for children's events etc and sending them to relatives virtually and a new digital camera my husband got me helps too. I have been wanting to take some photo shop classes, as every time I want edit a photo, it's costing me through my graphics designer. Small changes that I know I can do myself for free. I am going to take more pictures of the kids as they are growing up too fast now I have years in between that are lost forever that I have not captured!
I'm in the process of looking for a new camera.
We have a great DSLR [is that what they are called] by Canon that I love but it is not meant for 'quick she is doing something cute!' shots.
The point and shoot I have is pretty beat up and I've lost the battery charger. Normally it goes underway with hubby so I'm looking for a good point and shoot for me.
Other then that I normally take too many photos! My goal this year is to stay better caught up with my scrapbooking. Even if it is staying organized with all the pictures I intended to add to it.

This is an interesting resolution for me, as I was once a photographer and made a good living at it. However, it consumed my life at one point. I realized that I took so many pictures that I stopped enjoying the moment. I tons of pictures of the moment, but I never experienced the moment for what it truly was. So I gave it up for a long long time.
I recently just sold every camera I owned aside from one Canon SLR 35mm camera that was the first SLR camera I ever owned. I never really use it anymore, but it's sentimental. This past Black Friday, I bought a Kodak 10.3mp one shot camera. It's definitely a challenge for me going from knowing how to work the technical side of a camera to being able to take the shots I want using a one shot camera. I can't manipulate the shot the way I did using my SLR cameras. lol I am now trying to cheat a bit with some digital photo programs to try to get the shots I want. So maybe that should be my resolution challenge: learn to use photo programs better.
One more thing.... I took several months between getting rid of my old cameras and buying this new one. It's really hard for me to remember that I even have this new one. So the challenge of taking MORE pictures this year will certainly help me remember that I even have one.
I know Flickr has a community of 365days which challenges you to taking one photo a day for 365 days in a row. I also have this awesome side blog that I've been saving for the new year that will be a photo project blog. http://laughgiveshareandforgive.blogspot.com (soon to have a regular domain w/o blogspot).
Something tells me out of all these resolutions, this will be the easiest for me.
By the way, Canon has workshops that might be coming to your area. On this page (http://www.usa.canon.com/dlc/controller?act=EventCalendarAct) scroll down and click the drop down box for your location and it will pull up events happening in your area.
Nikon also has workshops. Find out more here: http://www.outthereimages.com/workshops.html
I am an on and off photographer. I got a new camera a year ago and I am trying to use it more often. This Christmas I gave the camera to my hubby so that I would actually be in some of the pictures. Today I was uploading our Christmas pictures and I'm still not in any of them! Oh well. I need to get back to scrapbooking more. I am soooooo far behind.

I took lots of shots in 2008. It was a resolution that I actually did well at. :)
This year? I want to take a month-long series of photos of every day life. Maybe once each season. I know that will feel inconvenient at times, but it would make a great photobook to give the kids when they are grown. Memories of their childhood.
I wrote a little series of my so-not-a-pro photo tips here: http://justpurelovely.typepad.com/justpurelovely/2008/06/photography-the-light-effect.html
It was a week-long series. Included it in is what I learned about buying cameras from a professional Disney photographer.
