Go Outside Your Comfort Zone! Day 15 of 15 Days of New Years Resolutions

We all have them.  Those secret fantasies of where we want to take our blog or our business.  Or taking that step to start from scratch to learn a new skill set.  Maybe it's auditioning for community theatre, making videos to complement our blog, or introducing ourselves to someone that inspires us.

No matter how you slice it, dreaming it is the easy part.  Taking that first step to make it happen is scary.  It's uncomfortable.  And it's something too many of us put off.

But why?  What's holding us back?  I will tell you...do any of these ring true with you?

  • Fear of failure

  • Discouraged by the overwhelming work it might take to make it happen

  • Doubts that your vision will become the reality

  • Burn Out

Yeah, I've felt that way before and there's a project I've had in the back of my mind for a few months now that needed clarity but I've got my fears and doubts too.  But you know what?  I've spent a large part of this first day of the New Year to map out how I'm going to make it happen.  I encourage you to spend a few hours today, tomorrow, next week, but SOON...to do the same.

Besides the potential to create something all your own and bring your ideas and your dreams to fruition, some side effects of going out of your comfort zone include:

  • Inspiring others to do the same

  • Setting an example for the next generation (my younger sister is pictured here wearing the "Girls Can't What?" t-shirt I gave her for Christmas).

  • Surprise yourself

  • Come up with new innovative ideas

So on this last day of my 15 Days of New Years Resolutions series I encourage you to look within, think about what you really want to accomplish this year, and figure out what's been holding you back.  Then I want you to do your best to eliminate that stumbling block and go for it!

Want help reaching your blogging and business goals this year?  Want to network with other ambitious, entrepreneurial women to support each other in your endeavours?  Sign up for Inner Circle, my on-going, affordable group consulting.

And in the meantime, stay tuned as I will be stepping out of MY comfort zone in the weeks to come (and my hope is that you will benefit from me doing this!)

Cheers & Happy 2009!

Jessica.. yet another great posting. I love the shirt you gave your sister, it is a great message to her that she as a girl can do anything she wants.

The best things have happened for me when I trust my instincts instead of analyzing whether or not I'm 100% qualified/capable of doing something. Sometimes you just have to learn by jumping in and doing it. That's what happened when I started my blog design business.

Your post is great! Very inspiring. But I have to admit something here - I never, ever made New Year's resolutions! Is it wrong? Sounds like everybody doing it, except me. I do set goals for myself, but I don't say this has to happen this year. Maybe I am afraid to fail and then feel bad about it.

Jessica,
Thanks so much. You have helped me refine my goals for 2009. I plan to join your Inner Circle in the near future.
Blessings!

I have to say that whenever I do go outside my comfort zone, I am very nervous at first, but if I do it several times it starts to become easier. I know that 99% of the time that I leave my comfort zone to do something that I know will benefit my business, it ALWAYS does. I am always glad that I took that step. My business doesn't just grow, but I grow as a person.

The second thing I notice is that if I keep doing that "task", I not only get used to it and it become much easier, but then I see other people starting out with it and I know that they are out of their comfort zone. It comforts me to realize that I wasn't the only one nervous about it. It gives me the confidence to strectch myself even more.
