The Ellen Show: Social Media Fantasy Campaign
I challenge anyone who has watched The Ellen Show to say that they did not laugh out loud once during an entire episode. Her opening dance sequence puts a smile on my face. (Full disclosure: I often get up on my feet and dance along with her).
It's clear that Ellen's got it going on when it comes to leveraging the web and social media to promote her show. Her video archives could easily entertain anyone for a year who has been forced to give up cable television due to the economy. Heck, she's even got a game of the week, which admittedly, I've avoided for fear of taking away my oh so productive time on Twitter.
However, for me personally, I'd love to see Ellen take her social media undertakings to new heights. And since this is my social media fantasy campaign I'm going to share my opinions on what I'd love to see.
First, I'd love to see Ellen start using Whrrl. I know she's pretty private when it comes to her life off the show but sharing candid snippets of her life off-set using Whrrl would be awesome! (Full disclosure, I'm a blogger partner of Whrrl's and it's BECAUSE I think they're application is amazing - I probably use it more than I should). Using Whrrl would be a safe, unintrusive way for Ellen (and hopefully Portia!) to offer some accessibility to her private life while maintaining control of content. In fact, I showed Alison Sweeney of Days of Our Lives and host of The Biggest Loser how to use Whrrl when we were on our EA SPORTS Active retreat and she's a guest on Ellen's show today! She'll be playing EA SPORTS Active with Ellen on the show. I hope you'll be tuning in with me!
I'd also love to see Ellen select 2-3 bloggers a month to be her guest bloggers. They could blog about the show's featured guests, vlog themselves dancing along with Ellen, and document their reactions to Ellen's daily monologues. Additionally, they could also help to be the voice behind @TheEllenShow 's Twitter profile. Ellen has millions of followers but doesn't follow that many back. I know she's a busy lady and all. I can almost guarantee one of her staff or interns monitors her Twitter account. So why not introduce some more interactivity by having guest bloggers who tweet too? Kind of like Ellen interns on the web?
I'd also love to see an Ellen Facebook Application. Perhaps one that lets you choose from among a handful of her favorite songs along with any from musician guests during the week. Then you could choose different dance moves from provided choices and put them in a sequence. Finally you could choose to have Ellen or Tony perform the dance moves and then send to a friend as a "gift" on Facebook. That would sure beat getting a piece of Flair!
I think it would be also really cool to have a member of the audience (vetted by producers of course) live tweet every episode as it's being taped. It would offer a point of view we don't normally see and also give Ellen another authentic way to promote her show.
If anyone from The Ellen Show is watching, I'd love to come on and talk social media with Ellen at some point. If given the opportunity, I'd totally get down and dance with Ellen (I've got some moves!)
